Calling All Deranged Writers--You can Quote Me on This!

I have concocted a new weekly feature for this blog. It's called

"QUOTE ME ON THIS"

which will be a quote from ole Mean Pete his own crazy self offering up tidbits of hopefully helpful writing advice for all those mad writers out there or those wishing to be writers, mad or otherwise.

I hope it helps. If you have questions you'd like addressed in a weekly tidbit, drop me a comment!

Here's the first one:

QUOTE ME ON THIS: Focus
Funny how sometimes writing can be like building a wall with hot, steaming horse apples that turn to mush in our hands and make us want to retch up our pancakes. Believe me, I’ve been there. It makes you feel downright...well, moribund. It makes you wonder if selling cars wouldn’t be easier. But if you stick with it, and stay focused...give it an hour or two before you leave your computer or Big Chief tablet...the world you’re writing about will close around you, and those bricks of steaming horse dung will become square stones, light as feathers, that fit so easily into place you’ll be chuckling to yourself while your characters whisper sweet nothings in your ears.

Remember, focus is everything. Melville kept writing even after his Moby Dick debacle.

  1. Amen, fella. My worst writing comes from my grandpa who'd drive down any ol' dirt road on a whim "just because I've never gone this way." Better writing comes from my grandma who, paying attention to time and destination, occasionally smacked him upside the head.
