A Fistful of Summer Oaters!

Here are some of my latest oaters up and running on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble.  The Lou Prophet book is also available as one of those old-fashioned print books.  Remember them?

Guaranteed good, action-packed summer reading, nary a dull paragraph in the bunch.  The pack starts out with .45-CALIBER FURY, Book 2 in the Cuno Massey saga.  Just went up yesterday, so fresh you can still smell the virtual ink!

Ernie Pyle, Great American Writer

This time of year I always think of the great World War II correspondent and one of the best all-around American writers I've ever read, and learned a hell of a lot from reading and rereading--Ernie Pyle.

Here's a link to Pyle's greatest piece of writing and what I think is the best short piece of writing you'll find anywhere.  Notice how he puts you right there in that terrible, somber scene with just the right details, and makes you feel what those soldiers were feeling when they came upon the body of Captain Waskow.  Neither Chekov nor Maupassant good have done it any better.  Pyle was truly a great American writer but I'll bet only one out of a thousand even know his name.  The sands of time pile up fast.

Right now there's a documentary running on the Documentary Channel about Pyle called FROM TWO MEN AND A WAR.  Check it out and learn about a great American writer who has unjustly been mostly forgotten.

Two Lou Prophet Books Up Today!

One's new and one's dang near fifteen year's old.  (How can my books be getting old when I'm so young?!)  Anyway, the great Piccadilly Press has reprinted the third book in the series, with a much better cover, by Cody Wells, than the original, and Berkley has put out the latest, HELL'S ANGEL, with also a dang good cover though call me a curmudgeon but I'm just not a fan of computer-generated "paintings."  But, believe me, what's under the cover is terrific!

HELL'S ANGEL is the longest Prophet book I've written so far, and it has a guest-starring role with a character I write about under my Frank Leslie name.

Guess which one!

THE DEVIL'S MISTRESS (below) marks the first appearance of Prophet's beautiful, unbalanced sidekick, the Vengeance Queen herself--Louisa Bonaventure.  I wrote this book during a very long, cold spring in my old farmhouse in Minnesota, when all my dogs and cat and I were still alive and young!

Somehow, Prophet and Louisa manage to stay the same age forever, lucky skunks...
(Should be up soon at Barnes & Noble, as well!)

Mean Pete's Favorite Mean An' Nasty Lunch

Same as below only with peanut butter and a glass of iced tea!

Mean Pete's Favorite Mean An' Nasty Breakfast

People are always asking Mean Pete what he eats for breakfast.  Awaiting Mean Pete's answer, they sort of wince and turn away, as though they expect him to say he dines on the children he traps in the ravine by his house.

Pshaw!

Shame on them to think such a thing.  Mean Pete doesn't eat the little ones.  He feeds 'em to his dogs!  Hah!

Anyway, Mean Pete's favorite breakfast is a very simple one, and his own recipe.

MEAN PETE'S MEAN AN' NASTY BREAKFAST
(though about the only thing mean an' nasty about it is that Pete himself makes it and eats it)

(For six medium sized griddle cakes)
A cup or so of whole Wheat flour
handful of oats
Lots of crushed walnuts
pinch of salt
two pinches of baking soda
a couple of big plops of yogurt
two dribbles of honey
milk
Then you just need a couple of eggs sunny-side up, some good old-fashioned maple syrup, enough butter to give your cardiologist a panic attack, and a glass of milk.  I'd have added a couple of Boulder brats but I had three last night for supper and I gotta stay in trim so I can fight Apaches.
And...voila!  There's Mean Pete's Mean An' Nasty Breakfast.  Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I hear a dog choking on a little one.  How many times do I have to tell them to slow down and take their time, like the French? Dining ain't a foot race, you curs!

(And by the way, my next Lou Prophet tale will be out tomorrow...)
